PRP Q & A

What is platelet-rich plasma?

Your blood contains platelets, which are responsible for clotting your blood in the event of an injury. Platelets also contain unique growth factors; these are proteins that stimulate new cell growth in injured or diseased tissue as part of your natural immune process.

When platelets are separated from the other components of your blood in a centrifuge, the resulting serum is called platelet-rich plasma. PRP is highly concentrated, so it has a potent healing effect when injected back into your body at the site of an injury.

What are the benefits of PRP injections?

When injected into the site of an injury or degenerative condition, PRP offers pain relief, and it can accelerate your body’s natural healing process. It is an excellent option to consider if you’d like to avoid orthopedic surgery or long-term use of pain medications.

Additional benefits include:

  • Increasing circulation
  • Reducing inflammation
  • Accelerating recovery
  • Stimulating collagen production
  • Stimulating tissue growth

PRP also recruits stem cells to the injection site, thus enhancing its ability to regenerate healthy tissue.

What conditions can PRP therapy treat?

Dr. Duffner uses PRP injection therapy to treat a wide range of injuries and conditions. These include:

  • Rotator cuff injuries
  • ACL injuries
  • Meniscus injuries
  • Epicondylitis (tennis elbow)
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Tendinitis
  • Bursitis
  • Bone fractures

If you have a severe injury or an advanced form of age-related arthritis, Dr. Duffner may recommend that PRP injections be combined with stem cell injections to achieve the maximum healing and pain relief that regenerative medicine can offer.

What should I expect during my PRP injection procedure?

Dr. Duffner performs PRP injection therapy as an outpatient procedure right in the office. First, he draws some of your blood from your arm using a syringe. Next, you wait for a short time while a centrifuge spins your blood to create the PRP serum. When this process is complete, Dr. Duffner will carefully inject the PRP into the treatment site.
